Pismo Beach: An Off-road Sunset

Central and Southern California’s only off-road beach…

The sunset begins at Pismo Beach.

There’s nothing more iconic as driving on a beach in a jeep in California. It’s also ironic, that although this scene is used quite often in car commercials, most of the beaches that you can drive on California are in the northern half of the state. Pismo beach is the furthest one south that you can drive on with a 4x4 vehicle. Since purchasing my jeep a few months before, this was the first time that I could test out it’s four-wheel-drive system in a sand setting. Also close-by, are the Pismo Beach dunes, the real test among off-road enthusiasts. I was lucky to get on the beach as they do require vehicle registration and my travel permit was just enough. It’s also worth noting that there is a boundary off where you can drive and where you can’t, so be aware and look for the signs.

Not only was this the first time to test out the jeep’s capabilities, it was finally the perfect opportunity to fly my drone for the first time. My DJI Mavic Air 2 was one of the more expensive pieces of equipment that I had purchased at the time. Drones are also notoriously easy to destroy, so it took some courage to finally send it up in the air. Of course, I’m absolutely glad that I did, as it quickly turned into a beautiful sunset along the coast. I also learned one of the most important lessons when capturing drone footage, a straight line and a long shot duration is your best friend in the editors room.

The sun dips behind the clouds and beneath the horizon.
