Morro Bay: A Postcard Beach Town
Morro Rock is the standout in this central California beach town…
Morro Rock at Morro Bay
By the time I made it to Morro Bay, the sun had long set after my adventure down at Pismo Beach. Morro Bay was going to be my stop for the night all determined by the popular hotels tonight app. As I’ve traveled across the country, I usually see what good deals are on my route and head towards the best choice for lodging. This was one of those times where I was once again impressed by the location I had decided to spend the night.
After checking in to my motel, I was glad to see that the main downtown area was only a few blocks away. I walked to the few bars and restaurants that were still open and thankfully found one that was still serving food. As much as I enjoy traveling through a place when there’s a lot of people out like during the weekend. Every now and then I enjoy traveling through small towns during the week. Things are much slower although there’s usually some locals always out and about on a week night. This is a great opportunity to meet people and talk, especially a bartender or server who may also be having a slow night. It’s a great way to ask for recommendations for things to check out around town.
After some amazing steak tacos and a few brews, it was time to retire for the night. I decided to walk down to the harbor and listen to the sounds of the bay. Although everything was closed, there was plenty of activity. You could hear seagulls and even walruses or seals off in the distance. There were a few fishermen working on their boats, and even still people walking in and out of mostly empty marina-side bars. It was a great experience just to stand on the dock, and stare out into the unknown abyss. At this point I had not seen the bay’s famous rock, but the next morning after checking out, I went back down to the harbor and captured the following photos. What an amazing sight it was.
