Monterey: Coastal Fog

Powerful wind and surf shapes the raw elements with the sound of the sea…

What lies beyond the fog?

After spending the night and morning in Morro Bay, I made my way north and made it to the coastal town of Monterey, CA. After arriving in the afternoon, I made my way to my starting point. While browsing around Google Maps I saw a point of interest that felt like the right place to start. The point I was headed to was the memorial for John Denver the singer and environmental activist. It was off the coast of Monterey that his plane crashed in 1997. John Denver and I go way back, although I never knew him personally. I was introduced to his music by my mother, and his albums were a staple in family road trips. Up and down the west coast, from California to Washington and back, for years and years. John Denver’s music became synonymous with a long car-ride and a journey to somewhere far away.

Although most would know him for his hit “Take me home, country road”, there were many other songs that left their mark on me. He sang of the mountains, of nature, leaving, and returning home. To this day, anytime I find myself on a long car-ride and a journey, I will listen to his wildlife concert for old time sake. Traveling to his memorial was a way to say thank you. There was magic and mystery at the point at Monterey Bay. I spent the rest of the day there, at least a number of hours, listening to the waves roll in and crash upon the rocks. The air was thick with fog and the smell of the sea, and right before the sun began to set, a beam of light pierced through the clouds.

Rocks break the powerful surge.

Man vs. nature.

Cypress in the light.
